Problem Recognition, Definition and Evaluation
The
problem is to determine
which of Tuckman’s Stages or Phases my team is in and use that to determine
which LEADERSHIP STYLE is
appropriate for me to be using.
Tuckman
Stage describes team development into four stages: Forming, Storming, Norming, & Performing. The method used to determine the stage is by answering 32 questions in a survey (copyright by Donald Clark).
For
a better result, we may have to compile all of the team member’s result and
come up with more accurate approach in determining the team’s stage. However,
the best I can get are data derived only from team member who already post the
blog.
The Result & What we are?
The score of answering 32 questionnaires submitted by each team member including
myself (anonymously) come up as the following result:
Using PERT Analysis, we can see that team members are in the similiar perception
on what was going on in the team by capturing the interaction happened during
the 5 days Face To Face Meeting Class. We can say that the survey data are
approximately reaching consensus.
The score is high in Performing
stage although it only has a little difference with the
Norming stage.
It
indicates that the team is already reaching up
the Performing stage. However, the small differences between the Norming stage
and the Performing stage indicates the team are in a transition phase.
Development of the
Feasible Alternatives
There
are some Leadership Styles alternatives that we can use for the
team:
2. Autocratic Leadership
3. Bureaucratic Leadership
4. Charismatic Leadership
5. Democratic/Participative Leadership
6. Laissez-Faire Leadership
7. Task-Oriented Leadership
8. People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented
Leadership
9. Servant Leadership
10. Transformational Leadership
Develop the outcomes for each alternative
- Autocratic,
Bureaucratic, and Charismatic Leadership are appropriate for routine or
non-skilled jobs and give the quick decision making
- Transactional
and Task Oriented Leadership are focused on getting the task done on time
-
Democratic/Participative,
Laissez Faire, Relation-Oriented, Servant, and Transformational Leadership give
some authority to the Team member to make a decision
Selection of the acceptable criteria.
In order to determine
which of Tuckman’s Stage of Phase this team is, at least the following criteria
must be considered:
-
The way each team member trust the others as
an individual and as a team
-
The way decision making is conducted
-
The relationship within the team
-
Team commitment
-
The way team achieve its goal
Some of the team
behaviour that can be addressed in proofing that the team is in transition from
Norming to Performing Stage but most likely is the Performing stage are:
appreciation and trust build, members self-reinforce team norms, highly
motivated to pass the exam, individuals take pleasure in the success of the
team, high trust in everyone by sharing the tasks, teams
do not need much supervision in
working the tasks, the team already has the knowledge creation
and synergy, and the team are able
to work under limited time.
Analysis and comparison of the alternatives
Based on the criteria and
the outcomes for each alternatives, the possible leadership style we can chose
for the Team are Democratic/Participative, Laissez Faire, Relation-Oriented,
Servant, and Transformational Leadership.
Based on the limited time,
Democratic/Participative, Laissez Faire, Relation-Oriented, and Servant
leadership style can’t be use because takes time to getting the task done
correctly
Select the preferred alternative
The Tuckman test result show the Team stage
is Performing phase. It indicates the team member are highly-knowledge and
motivated, so the team doesn’t need much supervision from the Leader.
Transformational Leadership is the best alternative for the Team
Performance Monitoring & Post Evaluation of Result
The performance of the team
tracked in the weekly report. By calculate the CPI and SPI of each Team member,
we can measure how effective is the Transformational Leadership Style for our
Team.

AWESOME Bu Sidha!!!
ReplyDeleteOUTSTANDING first posting. Very impressive!!!
You followed our step by step process very well and you did a nice job on your citations.
Can't ask for anything better than this example.
Now for your W2 posting, you are free to pick any topic you wish. But instead of waiting until Wednesday, to stick with our early dates, you should be posting this on Sunday or Monday, which will leave Tuesday-Thursday for you to work on your paper, then Friday and Saturday to contribute to the weekly report.
Bottom line- very nice job and looking forward to seeing more postings of this quality.
