1. Problem
Recognition, Definition and Evaluation
My first assignment is to start the
blog with very interesting topic i.e LEADERSHIP
STYLE, Working On Teams in my Mahakam 13 team.
The objective of this topic is to Identify
which stage of the Mahakam 13 team development is, what is the behavior, how we
can visualized and what kind of leadership style that can be implemented on the
team?
To found out the problem I used
Tuckman’s model The Forming – Storming – Norming – Performing which is first proposed
by Bruce Tuckman in 1965.
The method I used to determine the
stage is by answering 32 questions in a survey “What Stage our Team in?” (copyright
by Donald Clark)
The assessment took about 20 minutes
for me to measure a total of 32 questionnaires by using the scoring system.
Followings are the summary of my total scores for each stage of the Tuckman’s
model:
No.

2. Development
of the Feasible Alternatives to
determine the Leadership Style
Based from (U.S. Army Handbook,
1973): there are three major styles of leadership which is:
a. Authoritarian or autocratic (I want both of you to. ..)
b. Participative or democratic (Let's work together to solve
this. .. )
c. Delegative or Free Reign (You
two take care of the problem while I go. . .)
3. Develop the outcomes for each alternative
Leadership
a. Authoritarian style is used when leaders tell their
team what they want done and how they want it accomplished, this style is
appropriate for the boss to his subordinate, from father to his son etc.
b. Participative style, this style involves the leader
including group member in the decision making process (determining what to do
and how to do it).
c. Delegative or Free Reign, in this style, the leader
allows the team member to make the decisions. However, the leader is still
responsible for the decisions that are made. This is used when team member are
able to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do
it.
4. Selection of the acceptable criteria.
As shown in the above result, Norming
Stage has score 37 which was the highest score. It indicated that Mahakam 13
team has become cohesive or unified. Each member will ask "What do the
other members want me to do?" or “Can we agree and work as a team? " In
general, at this stage, we have decided the purpose and action plan for the
group. Each member has accepted the responsibility and have the ambition to
work for the success of the group.
The team showed trust in terms of mutual respect by assuming that all
members are competent and smart. The team also believe that it is not possible
for every member to know everything, so they shared the information they have.
5. Analysis and comparison of the alternatives
By understanding the
behavior of the team, we know that Authoritarian
Leadership style is not going to work on Mahakam 13 group. The team is need the
leader who can compromising and collaborating, desire to support and serve the
team as well as lead from the front. From that point there are two alternative Leadership style which appropriate for the
team i.e.:
a.
Participative
or democratic leadership style or
b. Delegative/Free Reign Leadership
6. Select the preferred alternative
Observing at
the characteristic of the norming stage as described above, project or
program manager should be adopting leadership models from which is “Participative or democratic Style“ This
style involves the leader including team member in the decision making process
(determining what to do and how to do it). The Project/Program manager will be
act as planning, controlling, supporting and Informing.
7. Performance Monitoring
& Post Evaluation of Result
Democratic Leader ship style will be implemented on the
Mahakam 13 team for AACE project and the performance of this outcome will be
monitoring by weekly report.

Excellent posting, Pak Felix!!! Nice work!!
ReplyDeleteYou followed the step by step process very well and your content was appropriate.
You also cited your references appropriately using APA format.
Not sure if your assessment is accurate, but let's see what happens in the coming weeks..... Lets see if you truly are already in the norming phase or if you are still in the forming stages....
Now, for your W2 posting, you are free to pick any topic you want, but my best recommendation would be to pick a topic that is somehow related to your paper topic.
Consistent with my advice to "Work Smart, NOT Hard" I would urge you to go to the blogs from other classes, see what they wrote and pick a topic that interests you.
Again, excellent job on your first posting and looking forward to 24 more in the coming weeks.
