W1_Hastin_Tuckman Assessment

1.       Problem Recognition

Building a solid team is very challenging. After passing our 5 days intensive face to face course in which we learnt about project management and its tools, team which consist of 13 people comes from multibackgrounds of either education or work environment must working together cooperatively and collaboratively to ensure the quality of deliverable we have to submit on time.

What’s make it challenging? Because we have to maintain good communication among team members that works in distance learning method. We have to make sure that instruction of each deliverable is receipt clearly by all team members and each member understanding his role  so we can achieve team goals successfully. As a part of team, we ought to know where we are now, in which phase we are standing now, and what kind of leadership is perfectly match with team.

Problem definition: to investigate team development stages

2.       Development of Feasible Alternatives

There are some theories of development team or group work dynamic. One that quite popular was published by Dr. Bruce Tuckman, a psychology professor at Ohio State University. He divided stage process of team development into 4 stages as Forming, Storming, Norming and  Performing. This theory help us to identify the development of team and analyze its behavior so we can decided what type of leadership is appropriate.

3.       Tuckman Assessment

To investigate what stage is  My team in, I had completed the Team Development Survey by Dr. Tuckman, then entered all the scores for each question. Based on my assessment, I perceive my team in Norming Stage. The survey result as shown on this table below:

Stage
Score
Forming Stage
22
Storming Stage
16
Norming Stage
31
Performing Stage
27

Figure 2 : Survey Result Table

4.       Result Analysis

The highest score of my survey result was Norming Stage, it’s indicates that team already stable, all team members are clearly accept their roles and responsibilities, all team members feel comfort to express their ideas and consensus of idea and decision are made by team agreement. It’s strongly indicate that commitment was there and everybody notice how important their contribution to the team achievement. In my opinion, why do we have the high score in  Norming Stage are because we have same perception in goals, visions, and having excitement felt during struggling together both to complete project plan and ensure the quality of our deliverable on the right time.

5.       Conclusion

In the Norming Stage, Participating Leadership is the most appropriate Leadership style to be applied. The project Manager has to facilitate the process of making decision with low direction, listening more and give more advise to achieve group harmony.

  1. Nice job on the CONTENT Bu Hastin, but you really didn't follow our step by step model very closely.

You did fine on Steps 1 and 2, but then you drifted off and missed Steps 3-7.......

And you did a great job on your citations.

Not a bad start for your first posting but starting with your W2 posting, it is very important that you follow the step by step process as shown on page 7 of your Engineering Economy, Figure 1-1.

Why is this so important? Because for the "Part 2" questions on your EVP, PSP and CEP exams this assignment is the only way I have of helping you develop a structured approach to solving problems which AACE will be likely to score you highly for using. Following this format will also help you in structuring your paper.

Bottom line- a good first posting but for your W2 onwards I will be looking for you to follow our Step by Step process.
